What I Learned
This project's big goal was learning how to set up a demo so we could make it into a Steam next fest. This ended up not being that big of a challenge, plus, we were able to reuse some logic from our last game, Gnaw & Order, which helped speed up our development time considerably. This meant that we were able to spend more time on polish and expanding systems in our game. On release, there are 300+ cards, 50+ relics, 30+ hero powers, 50+ charms, 60+ enemies (including one that you build as you play), and a whole bunch more. One place for improvement is how we made the tutorial for our game. Most games in this genre tend to have a really hands off approach when teaching players, so we decided to replicate that. It means you can get into the game a lot faster, but newer players might struggle more. What ended up being the most interesting mechanic for me to work on in this game was our combo system. Each card has up to three effects it can do based on the current combo level which means 300+ cards multiplied by roughly three effects. It was a ton of fun to balance as well!
